Orthosis manufacturers play a central role in medical technology by developing products that help people with physical disabilities to cope with everyday life and improve their mobility. Three of the German leading companies in this field are Ottobock SE & Co. KGaA, ORMED GmbH and medi GmbH & Co. KG. These companies have a long tradition in the manufacture of orthoses and offer innovative solutions for various medical needs.
1. ottobock SE & Co. KGaA
Ottobock SE & Co. KGaA, headquartered in Duderstadt, Lower Saxony, was founded by Otto Bock in 1919. Today, the company is a global leader in orthopaedic technology and is known for its innovative prostheses and orthoses. Originally founded to help the many war invalids after the First World War, Ottobock developed series production techniques for prostheses at an early stage that set standards worldwide.
The company’s most important products include the C-Brace®, a microprocessor-controlled leg orthosis that enables people with lower limb paralysis to walk again, and the Genu Arexa®, a knee orthosis specially developed for rehabilitation after cruciate ligament injuries.
Ottobock employs around 8,000 people worldwide and generated sales of around 1.2 billion euros in 2022. The company relies heavily on research and development to consolidate its market leadership in the field of bionic prostheses and digital healthcare solutions.
Update 2024: Ottobock’s positive development continues. On 10 July this year, the acquisition of the Danish company Sahva A/S, a provider of orthopaedic technology, was completed.
2. ORMED GmbH
ORMED GmbH, based in Freiburg im Breisgau, is a specialised manufacturer of orthopedic aids. The company offers a wide range of orthoses for use in prevention, therapy and rehabilitation. Since its foundation, ORMED has continuously worked on developing products that impress with their functionality and user-friendliness.
One of ORMED’s outstanding products is the ORMED TriActive® series, a range of knee orthoses specially developed for post-operative rehabilitation. These orthoses are characterised by their high stability and adaptability, which makes them particulaly suitable for use in physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
ORMED is a medium-sized company with around 150 employees. Annual turnover is in the double-digit million range. The company focusses on the German market, but has also gained international importance, particularly due to the quality and reliability of its products.
3. medi GmbH & Co. KG
medi GmbH & Co. KG was founded in Bayreuth in 1951 and has developed into one of the worlds leading manufacturers of medical aids. The company offers a wide range of products, including compression stockings, supports and orthoses. medi is known for using state-of-the-art materials and technologies to develop products that are both functional and comfortable
A key medi product is the protect.orthosoft® range, which includes soft, elasticated supports and orthoses designed to support and stabilise joints. These products are particularly suitable for use in prevention and rehabilitation and are used in medical facilities worldwide.
medi employs around 3,000 people worldwide and achieved a turnover of around 500 million euro in 2022. The company attaches great importance to innovation and research in order to continue to offer high-quality products that meet the needs of patients.
