List of 3 large mechanical engineering companies for packaging technology in Germany

This article was written as part of the research process for our overview of the largest mechanical engineering companies in Germany. The list contains a wealth of information, such as turnover figures, sector classifications, areas of activity, address data, contact details suitable for serial letters and names of management. The most important players in the packaging manufacturer industry are also interesting in this context, which we examine in more detail in our separate list of the 50 largest German packaging manufacturers.

Germany is recognised worldwide for its leading role in mechanical engineering, particularly in the field of packaging technology. Machine builders in this sector develop and produce innovative solutions that are used in numerous industries, from the food and beverage industry to the pharmaceutical and consumer goods industries. Five of the most important companies in this sector are Krones AG, KHS GmbH, Multivac Sepp Haggenmüller, Windmöller & Hölscher KG and Focke & Co. We present three of them in more detail here.

1. Krones AG

Krones AG, based in Neutraubling, Bavaria, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of machines and lines for filling and packaging technology. The company was founded in 1951 and has developed into a global player in the industry. Krones offers a comprehensive portfolio ranging from filling and labelling machines to complete packaging lines.

Krones’ most important products include the Contiform stretch blow-moulding machine, which is used for the production of PET bottles, and the ErgoBloc L line, an integrated solution for blow-moulding, filling and labelling. These technologies are widely used in the beverage industry and stand for maximum efficiency and precision.

In 2022, Krones generated revenue of around 4.2 billion euros and employed around 17,000 people worldwide. The company attaches great importance to sustainability and continuously develops new technologies to reduce energy and material consumption in production.

Update 2024: Krones AG founds a new recycling company based in Flensburg. Dr Michael Gotsche becomes head of the company.

2. KHS GmbH

KHS GmbH, headquartered in Dortmund, is a leading supplier of filling and packaging solutions, particularly for the beverage, food and non-food industries. The company was founded in 1868 and is now part of Salzgitter AG. KHS offers a wide range of products, including filling machines, packaging lines and complete turnkey solutions.

An outstanding product from KHS is the InnoPET Blomax Series V, a blow-moulding machine known for its high energy efficiency and its ability to produce lightweight PET bottles. KHS also offers the Innopack Kisters line, which is used to pack bottles in shrink film or cartons.

In 2022, KHS achieved a turnover of around 1.3 billion euros and employed around 5,000 people. The company is known for its innovative strength and its commitment to environmentally friendly packaging solutions that meet the requirements of sustainable production.

3. Multivac Sepp Haggenmüller SE & Co. KG

Multivac Sepp Haggenmuller SE & Co. KG, based in Wolferschwenden, is a leading global provider of packaging solutions for food, medical products, consumer goods and industrial goods. The company was founded in 1961 and specialises in the development of vacuum packaging machines and automated packaging lines

Multivacs core products include thermoforming machines, which can produce flexible and rigid packaging in a variety of formats, and traysealers, which are used to seal pre-made trays. These machines are widely used in the food industry and are known for their reliability and efficiency.

Multivac achieved a turnover of around 1.5 billion euros in 2022 and employed around 6,800 people worldwide. The company focuses on technological innovation and sustainability, in particular by developing machines that conserve resources while meeting hygiene and product safety requirments
